HISTORY
The Barangay II was created under PD 79 of 1972 during the Marcos regime as a dictator during Martial Law years. The Barangay is about 10 meters away from the center or the heart of the municipality. The political division of Barangay II was undertaken by the COMELEC thus names Barangay I, Barangay I-A, Barangay I-B, Barangay II, and Barangay II-A in the Poblacion. Barangay II is one of the coastal barangays in the locality of which the major source of income is fishing. The Manapla Public Market is situated in Barangay. Pala-pala is one of the busiest commercial center in the morning where fish caught in the nearby islands is being sold by the commissioners. The Barangay II holds its fiesta every 12th of the month of June, in line with the celebration of the birth of our National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Barangay II pioneered Street Dancing Competition.
The first leader of the Barangay way back martial law era is Jose Gonzales Dinorog as an appointed Teniente del Barrio. The Barangay Secretary, Treasurer, Barangay Workers and Civilian Volunteer Organization (CVO) are under discretion of the Teniente Del Barrio having the appointing power of the mentioned positions. In the year 1986 in the EDSA revolution, there was a change in the political administration when Corazon Cojuanco Aquino was designated as President. In 1989, there was an election in the local government and the Barangay. Jose G. Dinorog ran for the position as Municipal Councilor and he won as the 3rd elected councilor. Before his position as Municipal Councilor, Jose G. Dinorog was elected as the first ABC President in the Municipality of Manapla.
Since there was a vacancy in the position of the Barangay Chairman, Sulpicio H. Sisa was appointed as Barangay Chairman replacing the predecessor. After the election of the local officials, the election of Barangay officials followed, hence the number one Kagawad will seat as Barangay Chairman. There were no remunerations or honoraria being received by the Barangay Officials. Two (2) years after, the Punong Barangay receives a monthly honorarium of Php 600.00 while Kagawad, Barangay Secretary and Treasurer receive PHP 300.00 per month. The voluntary services of the Barangay Officials was seen by the National officials, hence a corresponding honoraria was given to them.
In 1994, there was a mandated election of all Barangay officials. Bernie Dequito Gonzales was elected as Punong Barangay with a landslide victory over his four opponents. In 1997, he was again re-elected as Punong Barangay; however there was an extension of the office based on the bill sponsored by the upper and lower house until 2002. In his term, many proposed projects were implemented and had come to reality in collaboration with the Municipal, Provincial and National government through congressional fund. In 2002, he was re-elected, as Punong Barangay for his third term. Bernie D. Gonzales as Punong Barangay of Barangay II ran as ABC President in the Liga ng mga Barangay against his opponents Punong Barangay Roy J. Plagata and Punong Barangay Ramon Pama. The election was conducted on the 15th of October 2002. On the following day October 16, 2002, ABC President Bernie D. Gonzales seated as an ex-official member of the Sangguniang Bayan Member as a representative of the Barangays, there was another extension of office until 2007.
While on his term, he had served his constituent’s and had spearheaded the organization/re-organizations of the people’s organizations and non-governmental organizations under his administrations. He had constructed infrastructure projects, lights and water-facilities, and other basic necessities beneficial to the constituents of the barangay. He organized culture, sports and arts program with the cooperation of the constituents and the youth. Amateur singing contest, Dance sports competitions, Folk Dance competition, Basketball and Volleyball tournament and other related field had been sponsored by the Barangay officials.
In 2007, there was an election since Punong Barangay Gonzales had finished his term of office Punong Barangay. Gil B. Parreñas was elected as Chairman of Barangay II. Many projects had been implemented with the aid of the Municipal and Provincial government. The National Government has linkages in the implementation of projects through RAY-KALAHI-CIDSS and BUB programs due to typhoon Yolanda who had devastated the Northern Negros. Unfortunately, due to the untimely demise of Punong Barangay Gil B. Parreñas on March 8, 2018, Kagawad Alex V. Sunga replaced him as the number one Kagawad. In 2019, an election was held and Punong Barangay Alexander C. Maceda won over a majority of eight (8) votes over his opponents Mel T. Bayot and Junito P. Dequito. Many proposed projects are to be implemented as per priority programs and activities based on the action plan of the Barangay
Sad to say, on February 15, 2019 a fire gutted the Public Market. Many vendors stall owners and market block occupants were displaced. Immediate assistance to the victims was given by the Mayor Lourdes Socorro L. Escalante. God willing, Barangay II will be again a hustle and bustle public market as the center of commerce and industry in the locality. In collaboration of the LGU’s, especially our Provincial and National Government, Barangay constituents are aiming for the betterment or improvement of the community. As for this quarter, a multi-purpose building is constructed for the use of the constituents and for other purposes that may serve our people in the locality.

HISTORY
It was said that before the defeat of the Spanish troops in Manila Bay by Commodore George Dewey of America, civilization started to bloom between two creek outlets. Presently, the two creeks were known to be the Balolan and Mambugaong River. The settlement was visible at sea like a forest reservation and a sanctuary for wildlife. As the years went by, the population began to flourish. Intermarriages between family offspring incited closer family ties among them.
It was in the early 1900s, two years before the uprising or “Alsamiento” when the Spanish soldiers visited the place. They explored it and found it quite progressive. Home industries like mat weaving, shell-craft making and others were rampant while trade and barter system monopolized the place and its neighbouring barangay.
An inquisitive Spanish official asked the name of a particular material saying, “Que es?” Fearfully and tongue-tied, the native responded to the Spaniard holding the exquisite material in his hand – “Khambraey.” The Spanish official repeated the word in delight, calling it “Khambery.” The native gave each soldier a material made of Khambraey as a token. Due to their difficulty in pronouncing the word, the Spaniards called the place “Chambery” and used the name officially in communication and address.
At present, Chambery has been a receipt of development. It has facilities like health centers, an elementary school, wells that provide water and farm-to-market roads. The recorded Barangay captains of Chambery were: Bonifacio Elizario (1950-1975), Gorgorio Gonzales (1975-1982), Nehemia Bedico (1982-1991), Antonio Javarro (1991-1994), Salvador Gonzales (1994-1997), Sotero Calimpong (1997-2002), Rey Gonzales (2002-2013) and Ronnie Salo (2013-present).

HISTORY
According to legends of long time ago, a small island lies in the coastal part of Manang Pula, presently known as Manapla. One day, a man named Bernardo sailed his boat in favour of the blowing wind. To his surprise, his boat ended up stocked in the uninhabited shore. He called the place “Punta Ado” after his nickname, Ado. Upon climbing the hilltop, he observed another island shaped like a table or La Mesa. He sailed towards the place and saw few people living in the island which made him decide to stay there for good. Months passed and in that very place he met Dominga, whom he fell in love with and together they lived happily.
The table-shaped limestone became their spot for rod fishing every day, and then they sell their catch to the market to provide for their needs. It so happened that one unlucky day, they caught nothing, not even a small one. Together they prayed on the edge of the table-shaped limestone, where a mystical thing happened afterwards. Their prayer was answered; they had a bountiful catch. Many inhabitants saw the mysterious incident, so they went there and asked for help and favours on which the next day was all granted. The inhabitants called the place Punta La Mesa, after the mystical table-shaped limestone.
People started depending on the mystical La Mesa place that they became lax and lazy, always praying for miracles without trying to solve their problems on their own first. All they did was ask until such time when their prayers weren’t granted anymore. They wondered and reflected on what they had been doing since the place manifested a miracle and realized their wrongdoings and laziness. It taught them to work for their needs and desires and be grateful about the things they had been receiving.
Advance technologies and civilizations taught the people of Punta La Mesa to improve their means of living and lifestyle. As the place progressed, its name also changed. Punta La Mesa was too long for a place’s name that the syllable “La” was omitted every time people speak of the enchanted history of the place. At present, the place is known and called “Punta Mesa.”
Due to the growing populace of the locality, the Barangay Officials took initiative and presented their sentiments about the education of their constituents to the Municipal Mayor Hon. Enrique Hinlo. They looked for a place that would become the center of schooling for the youths in Punta Mesa. Mr. Porferio P. Conol Sr. agreed to construct the school on his own property for Php. 6,000.00 which was given to his sister Flavian Conol as the Municipality facilitated the documentation, thus a school was built in Punta Mesa for the education of the youths.

HISTORY
Long ago, a tall big tree called “Salong” grew by the bank of a brook along the shore of what is now called “Punta Salong”. So far, this was the tallest tree growing by that time. This tree was very useful to the fisherman and the sailor coming from Panay to this place, for this served as their guide for landing. Whenever they go benighted while fishing or sailing, they felt safe for there was the “Salong” tree which stood in the dark like a sentinel of the sea. They would just paddle their boats to the spot and land safely. Often times they would say, “Didto kita madungka sa punta nga may Salong” which later on just became “Sa Punta Salong.” They adopted the name and called the place Punta Salong.

HISTORY
1917, Don Miguel J. Osorio built the first sugar mill called North Sugar Company (NONSUCO) and the people called the place “Central Manapla”. This was the first Sugar Mill in the Province. During the outbreak of Japanese War, NONSUCO was almost completely devastated. Don Miguel thought that rehabilitating NONSUCO was too impractical to do. He therefore decided to merge its assets with those of VMC. It became Victorias Milling Company Incorporation, a result of the integration of two sugar mills – the original VMC and the North Sugar Company (NONSUCO).
In 1919, the mill was transferred to Victorias City. A rail road was constructed from Central Manapla to Victorias City for the train/wagon in transporting sugarcane to the mill. Various structures were built during the existence of NONSUCO and VMC, and until now some of those structures still remain i.e. uniform company houses (almost dilapidated) and “St. Joseph Hospital” (operational). The company also built a school which they named North Negros Elementary School presently the VICMICO II Elementary School.
The name “Purisima” is a Spanish baby name which means “pure”, people with this name has a deep inner desire to express their own power in a concrete manner and to achieve something great for humanity. However, based on personal interviews from old folks who are still alive, the name “Purisima” came from the name of a family member of “Hermillosa” who became the number one (1) Municipal Councilor in the Municipality of Manapla. BARANGAY OFFICIALS

HISTORY
Barangay Sta. Teresa is one of the smallest yet progressive barangays in the Municipality of Manapla, Province of Negros Occidental. The well-off hacienderos, Benedicto and Solatorio families donated their land and it was turned into a small community that was later known as Barangay Sta. Teresa in the year 1945. Sta. Teresa was derived from the name “Teresa”, the daughter of Mr. Solatorio and the word “Sta.” from the religious patron saint “St. Therese.” The Barangay was also called “Solatorio” because the Solatorio family was one of the benevolent hacienderos of the barangay.
The forefathers of this barangay were the Benedicto, Solatorio, Alba, Buencaloloy, Vasquez, Agtoto, Bolotano, Pama, and Tupaz family.
Mr. Poblencio Denson and Mr. Osias Bolotano Sales Sr. were the appointed Kapitan del Barrio. The elected officials of the barangay were Mr. Ramon Pama, Mrs. Eufemia Sanares and Mrs. Juliet Gonzaga Siruelo. The present Barangay Captain is Ms. Mae Ann Joy S. Olavia.
The Benedicto family also donated their land for public use where the government established a public school so the residents and neighboring barangays can send their children to school for free. The school was named Sta. Teresa Elementary School.
Later, the residents made Nuestra Señora de Salvacion as patron saint of the barangay for she is the saint of salvation and light. The residents devoted to her for miracles, maintaining peace and deterring those who seek to harm. Friends, relatives and devotees from neighboring barrios also come to celebrate the Barangay Annual Fiesta which is celebrated during the last Saturday and Sunday of May in honor of their Patron Saint Nuestra Señora del Salvacion.
The main source of income in the barangay is “pangunguma” or farming. At present, the barangay which is one of the smallest in the Municipality is now the home of Solar Power Plant and Biomass Plant making it known not only in agriculture but also as the center of economic industry.

BARANGAY OFFICIALS

HISTORY
Long ago, there was a couple who lived along the shore of Sitio Pulo near the converging river called Madanlog River. The couple was Crispino and Segundina. They were the first to settle beside the coastal area and their source of living is fishing. Crispino always had a good catch due to the abundance of marine life in the area, which Segundina brought to nearby places in exchange for other goods; this trading was called the Barter System. Along the coast, the couple also had tortor salt (tortoise salt) boxes for sun drying.
It was a gloomy afternoon, when Segundina was trying to cover the tortor boxes with banana leaves due to the expected outpour of rain. To her surprise, she noticed that a balangay or a small banca docked in front of their house. Two meztiso-looking Spanish approached and asked her about the name of the place. Since the two strangers spoke in Spanish, Segundina could not understand their words. The two men asked her again and Segundina eventually answered tortor for her instincts told her that they were asking about the place. The two men then called the place “Tortor” which was eventually known as Tortosa at present.
